PCOS is a set of symptoms due to elevated androgens (male hormones) in women.

Signs and Symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Irregular or no menstrual periods
  • Heavy periods
  • Increased hair growth in areas like the face or body
  • Acne
  • Pelvic pain
  • Difficulty getting pregnant
  • Patches of thick, darker, velvety skin may also appear.

The exact cause of PCOS isn’t fully understood.

It could be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. A higher body weight, reduced activity levels, or family history may increase the likelihood of PCOS

Diagnosis Of PCOS Is Now Standardized.

If any of the following criteria are met, a diagnosis of PCOS may be made.

1. Oligoovulation is infrequent or irregular ovulation (usually defined as cycles of greater than 36 days or less than 8 menstrual cycles a year)

2. Excess Androgen activity

3. Presence of polycystic ovaries, usually seen through an ultrasound

Your doctor may ask about irregular periods, run some blood tests, or recommend an ultrasound to better understand your symptoms. While PCOS can’t be cured, its symptoms can be effectively managed. A vaginal ultrasound procedure will be done to check for small ovarian follicles

PCOS cannot be cured but can be treated.

Typically, the following symptoms are managed:

  • Irregular menstruation
  • Restoration of fertility
  • Acne or skin condition
  • Elevated sugar levels
  • Heavy bleeding during period
