Natural remedies for PCOS and PMOS lifestyle support guide

PMOS (formerly PCOS) is a common hormonal and metabolic condition that can affect women and girls from adolescence onwards. Previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the condition was renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) in May 2026 to better reflect its broader endocrine and metabolic effects.

In this article, we’ll explain PMOS (formerly PCOS) and explore diet, lifestyle and complementary approaches that may support its management.

What Is PMOS (Formerly PCOS)?

PMOS, formerly known as PCOS, is a hormonal and metabolic condition. It can involve higher-than-normal androgen levels, irregular ovulation and other hormonal changes that may affect periods, skin, hair, fertility and metabolic health.

Girls and women with PMOS may experience:

Common Signs of PMOS (formerly PCOS)
  • Irregular or infrequent periods
  • Acne or oily skin
  • Excess facial or body hair
  • Changes in weight
  • Difficulty with ovulation or fertility
  • Hair thinning
  • Sleep-related problems
  • Anxiety, depression or other changes in emotional wellbeing

PMOS can begin during adolescence, but diagnosis in teenagers requires careful assessment because some features, such as irregular cycles and acne, can also occur during normal puberty.

PMOS (Formerly PCOS): Essential Information for Women’s Health

We at Adira spoke with gynaecologist Dr. Shilpa to learn more about PMOS (formerly PCOS).

Foods To Limit With PMOS (Formerly PCOS)

There is no single “PCOS diet” that works for everyone. A balanced, sustainable eating pattern can support overall and metabolic health, and dietary choices should be tailored to individual needs and preferences.

  • Limit highly processed foods and foods high in added sugars.
  • Limit highly refined carbohydrates where possible.
  • Follow dietary recommendations given by your doctor or qualified nutrition professional based on your individual health needs.

Foods To Include In A Balanced PMOS Diet

A balanced eating pattern can support overall and metabolic health in people with PMOS. Rather than focusing on individual “PCOS foods,” aim for variety and consistency.

  • Include vegetables and fruits regularly.
  • Choose whole grains such as brown rice, whole-wheat products and quinoa.
  • Include protein sources such as beans, lentils, tofu, eggs or other suitable proteins.
  • Add nuts and seeds as part of a balanced diet.
  • Choose water and drinks with little or no added sugar.

Dietary choices should be adapted to individual health needs, preferences and advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Nutritionist’s Perspective: Supporting PMOS Through Diet & Lifestyle

To understand the role of nutrition and lifestyle in managing PMOS (formerly PCOS), we asked Smitha Ramesh, Nutritionist and Founder of The Nutriverse, to share her perspective.

Smitha Ramesh shares:

PCOS is now renamed as PMOS – Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian syndrome as it reflects a condition which affects the entire body’s endocrine system and metabolism rather than just cysts on the ovaries.

We need to understand what could possibly be the underlying issues and accordingly suggest the remedies accordingly. There is no one concoction which will deal with PCOS symptoms or management.

1. Dysbiosis - Many a times, we see clients having very poor gut health due to bad food choices and bad lifestyle. A simple way to help gut health is to include prebiotics for the probiotics normally prescribed by the experts. A no fuss prebiotic is a simple salad of cucumber paired with either raw or blanched carrots and beetroots with a dash of lemon and salt. Quick pickles with the same vegetables also work.

2. Iron - Most of the women/girls with PMOS have low haemoglobin and low iron stores. Simple ways of improving blood quality would be to include certain items like dates, pomegranate, amla, green leavy vegetables, nuts and seeds, garden cress seeds, organ meats and millets. Preparing food accompaniments like chutneys and energy bars/ladoos with the above items is a tasty way to be consistent with eating iron rich foods.

3. Hormones and sleep - Many women/girls have meals which are deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids and Magnesium. An easy way of getting good fats is from nuts and seeds. They make good nutrient dense snacks.

4. Sunlight - Exposure to sunlight greatly helps in improving Vitamin D3 levels in the body.

5. Impaired digestion - When digestion is impaired, the metabolism is generally affected. Simple natural remedies like drinking ginger slice infused warm water with meals would help in improving digestion and thereby reducing the weight gain due to slow metabolism.

To sum up the natural remedies - Salad as suggested, iron rich foods, nuts and seeds, sunlight exposure and ginger as suggested. The bottom line is that all natural remedies are just adjuncts to the main modifications, which are diet and lifestyle modifications.

Exercise For PMOS (Formerly PCOS)

Regular physical activity is an important part of PMOS management. Activities such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, aerobic exercise and yoga can support metabolic health, physical fitness, weight management and overall wellbeing.

Remember to always speak with your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.

Managing Stress With PMOS

Practising techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing, self-care and therapy may help manage stress and support emotional wellbeing. Find approaches that work for you and that can be incorporated sustainably into daily life.

Complementary Approaches For PMOS

Some people explore complementary approaches such as yoga, acupuncture, Ayurveda or certain supplements alongside conventional PMOS care. However, evidence for many complementary therapies remains limited or inconsistent. Always discuss supplements, herbal preparations or alternative treatments with a qualified healthcare professional, particularly if you are already taking medication.

Healthy eating, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and appropriate medical care remain important parts of long-term PMOS management.
