Period & Running – Let’s Hear From A Runner

Do you wonder if you can go running on your period? Well, in our last article, we heard Dr Rajat’s expert opinion on running and staying fit. Now, let’s hear from Radhika Jayaraman, a runner who took up running a little late and hasn’t stopped running since. She grows stronger with every running season.

Do You Think Women Stop Training During Their Periods?

Everyone’s body is different. I’ve personally noticed that staying active helps me manage my period symptoms, though this may vary for each person. If your body feels up to it, gentle movement or a workout might help. But always listen to what your body needs during your period. If you’re not feeling up to it, you can cut back a little. Try gentle stretches or simple strength exercises—you might find they help you feel better.

In Your Opinion, What Is The Best Way To Deal With Bloating And Cramping?

I usually work out during my period. Whether it’s aerobics, going to the gym, or running, I’ve noticed it doesn’t make my symptoms worse. Instead, I feel much better after a workout. So, I would suggest women have a healthy workout routine even when they have their period. I believe it helps relieve bloating and cramping.

Does Period Affect Your Running Performance?

I have run long distances during my period. If you’re not dealing with pain or heavy bleeding, you might find that running still feels good. But it’s completely okay to take it easy if your body needs rest.

In General, What’s Your Advice To Women About Staying Healthy & Fit?

If you’re not experiencing heavy bleeding or severe cramps, I’d recommend you keep exercising during your period. Light exercises like stretching or walking can feel good. It’s best to go with movements that feel right for your body that day.

Radhika Jayaraman is a fitness enthusiast. She has completed 12 half-marathons (21.1 km), with a personal best of 1 hr 50 min. She completed her full marathon (42.2 km) in Mumbai this year in 4 hr 38 min. She has been running for just 2 years now.
